Retired fire fighter William Griffiths, a distinguished veteran of both World War II and the Somerville Fire Department, celebrated a remarkable milestone on Feb. 20, as he turned 100-years-old.

“Fire fighter Griffiths embodies the service and selflessness that America’s Greatest Generation is renowned for,” said 3rd District Vice President Jay Colbert.

Born in 1924, Griffiths’ journey of service began when he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps on Jan. 23, 1942, answering the call of duty during World War II. Over the course of his distinguished military career, Griffiths rose to the rank of corporal and participated in several major battles in the Pacific campaign, including Oro Bay in New Guinea, Cape Gloucester in New Britain, and Peleliu in the Palau Islands. He was wounded in Okinawa in the Ryuku Islands.

Following his discharge on Nov. 22, 1946, after nearly five years of service, Griffiths returned to Somerville, MA where he continued his legacy of service by joining the Somerville Fire Department.

After 32 years of service, Griffiths retired in June 1981.

As his family, friends, and Somerville, MA Local 76 members celebrated a century filled with experiences and memories, his life serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by those who have dedicated themselves to the service of others.

His devotion to his family, the Marine Corps, and the Somerville Fire Department is a remarkable legacy that certainly deserves this recognition.
