Florida Professional Firefighters Announce Dr. Steven
Katz
as their Emergency Medical Director
The Florida Professional Firefighters (FPF) announced
today that Steven Katz, M.D., FACEP, EMT-P,
has been appointed as their Emergency Medical
Director. FPF is pleased to announce that we are
the first state association of the International
Association of Firefighters (IAFF) with its own medical
director. Dr. Steven Katz, a former Paramedic, is a
board-certified emergency physician and longtime
advocate of both fire-based EMS and the fire service.
Serving as Associate Medical Director of Palm
Beach County Fire Rescue, Dr. Katz is also Chairman
of Emergency Medicine at Memorial Hospital
West in Pembroke Pines, and is the founder and
President of National Paramedic Institute, a Boynton
Beach based online education company focusing on
fire-based EMS continuing education. Dr. Katz
is one of the key authors of a national research
White Paper being presented to the U.S. Congress,
advocating fire-based EMS service as the preferred
model for EMS delivery in the United States.
Our EMS Medical Director will be a consultant to the
FPF, and he will be tasked with assisting in our
mission of promoting Fire-based EMS in the State of
Florida. Dr. Katz will help chart a course of
promoting the system that best meets the needs of the
citizens of the State of Florida. Job duties will
include assisting local unions and fire departments
with integrating EMS service, advising with EMS
protocols within fire departments, and being an
advocate for Florida’s Firefighters and Paramedics.
The Florida Professional Firefighters, Inc. is a
State Association chartered by the International
Association of Fire Fighters, AFL-CIO-CLC. The FPF is
comprised of 140 local affiliates and councils,
with a membership of 22,500 Firefighters and
Emergency Medical Services Personnel, working in 175
departments within the various state, county,
municipal, and special district governments of Florida.
The major and primary service provided by the FPF is
to be a governmental relations advocate, and
conduct a year-round legislative and lobbying program
in Florida’s State Capitol.
