as their Emergency Medical Director

The Florida Professional Firefighters (FPF) announced today that Steven Katz, M.D., FACEP, EMT-P,

has been appointed as their Emergency Medical Director. FPF is pleased to announce that we are

the first state association of the International Association of Firefighters (IAFF) with its own medical

director. Dr. Steven Katz, a former Paramedic, is a board-certified emergency physician and longtime

advocate of both fire-based EMS and the fire service. Serving as Associate Medical Director of Palm

Beach County Fire Rescue, Dr. Katz is also Chairman of Emergency Medicine at Memorial Hospital

West in Pembroke Pines, and is the founder and President of National Paramedic Institute, a Boynton

Beach based online education company focusing on fire-based EMS continuing education. Dr. Katz

is one of the key authors of a national research White Paper being presented to the U.S. Congress,

advocating fire-based EMS service as the preferred model for EMS delivery in the United States.

Our EMS Medical Director will be a consultant to the FPF, and he will be tasked with assisting in our

mission of promoting Fire-based EMS in the State of Florida. Dr. Katz will help chart a course of

promoting the system that best meets the needs of the citizens of the State of Florida. Job duties will

include assisting local unions and fire departments with integrating EMS service, advising with EMS

protocols within fire departments, and being an advocate for Florida’s Firefighters and Paramedics.

The Florida Professional Firefighters, Inc. is a State Association chartered by the International

Association of Fire Fighters, AFL-CIO-CLC. The FPF is comprised of 140 local affiliates and councils,

with a membership of 22,500 Firefighters and Emergency Medical Services Personnel, working in 175

departments within the various state, county, municipal, and special district governments of Florida.
