Professional Firefighters of New Jersey Hold MDA Boot Camp

The Professional Firefighters of New Jersey (PFANJ) MDA Boot Camp was held February 11 at The Ocean Place in Long Branch, New Jersey, kicking off the 2009 Fill-the-Boot campaign. Approximately 19 IAFF locals attended, along with PFANJ President Dominick Marino.

New Jersey fire fighters were recognized for their outstanding support of MDA in 2008, receiving awards in categories including: Goal Breakers, Double Club and New/Restored Program. Guest speaker Captain Peter Kearney, a member of the Uniformed Fire Officers Association (UFOA) of New York Local 854 spoke about how muscular dystrophy has affected his family – his son, Kevin, has Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.

Several locals (including Perth Amboy Local 286; Perth Amboy EMS Local 3994; Cherry Hill Local 2663; Jersey City Local 1064 and Local 1066; and Brigantine Local 2657) made presentations on MDA Summer Camp and on-duty and multiple-day Fill-the-Boot drives. Additionally, PTC Therapeutics based in South Plainfield, New Jersey, and Dr. John Bach, Co-Clinic Director of the MDA Clinic at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ), addressed the membership.
