Florida Fire Fighters Pass Landmark Bill
May 29, 2007 - Florida Governor Charlie Crist has signed House
Bill 99 (also known as the Iris Roberts Charitable Solicitation Act) into law,
exempting IAFF affiliates from permit requirements related to collecting for MDA
if certain conditions are met. The bill passed unanimously through the Florida
House and Senate and becomes effective July 1, 2007.
The landmark bill was spearheaded by Florida Professional
Firefighters (FPF) President Bob Carver and sponsored by Representative Ed
Hooper. Hooper has been FPF District Vice President Emeritus and a member of
Pinellas County, FL Local 2193. Named after two-term Florida State MDA Goodwill
Ambassador Iris Roberts, 9, this legislation has been long awaited by IAFF
locals that currently are prevented from street solicitations because of
prohibitive ordinances.
“Research advances are being made every day, and a cure for
neuromuscular disease is within our grasp,” says MDA Regional Director Susan
King Poole. “I thank Florida fire fighters from the bottom of my heart on behalf
of Florida’s children and adults who will have a better quality of life and a
longer life because of your commitment and hard work.”
