IAFF Western Trustee Bob Greenwood Dies
January
2, 2008 -- The International Association of Fire Fighters is
sad to report the passing of IAFF Western Trustee Bob
Greenwood on January 1, 2008, in Modesto, California. He was
71.
Services are planned for Monday, January 7, 2008, at the
Franklin and Downs McHenry Chapel located at 1050 McHenry
Avenue in Modesto. A reception will immediately follow at a
location to be announced.
“Brother Greenwood will be remembered for his unwavering
commitment to the IAFF and its members,” says IAFF General
President Harold Schaitberger. “He believed strongly in the
union movement and never stopped fighting for better working
conditions and benefits for professional fire fighters. He
will be missed.”
Greenwood began his career as a fire fighter in Modesto,
California, in 1967 and retired in 1984. As an active member
– and then as a retired member – of Modesto, CA Local 1289
Greenwood had a reputation for being a dedicated advocate
for union fire fighters.
He served on the Local 1289 executive board for 10 years,
six of which he was president. One of his most noted
accomplishments was gaining the right for union members to
become involved in political campaigns. Local 1289 earned
this right after suing the City of Modesto.
In 1980, Greenwood became secretary-treasurer for the
California Professional Firefighters (CPF), a position he
held until 1988. In 1990, he was elected IAFF Western
Trustee and served until his death on January 1, 2008.
Greenwood is survived by his mother, Lottie Robinson; his
brother, Ron Greenwood; his stepsons Michael and James Ivy;
his granddaughters Paige Ivy and Jaime Green; and three
great-grandchildren. His wife, Marianne, died several years
ago.
