In
addition, Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA), who delivered the commencement address,
received an honorary doctorate, along with retiring NLC President Susan Schurman.
All three IAFF graduates say that the knowledge gained at the NLC will help them
become better IAFF leaders. “I got my bachelor’s degree in labor safety and
health,” says Richard Blohm, a 30-year veteran fire fighter. Blohm is director
of occupational safety and health for the Professional Firefighters Association
of New Jersey (PFANJ).
Harrell, a 33-year veteran fire fighter, also studied labor safety and health.
“I’m hoping to build on what I learned at the NLC and go on to get my master’s
degree in either business administration or an emergency management-related
program,” he says.
Jarvis, who earned a bachelor’s degree in labor studies, has been actively
involved with the union for nearly 20 years. The 27-year veteran fire fighter
hopes to apply what he learned towards improving labor-management relations. “I
am armed and ready for anything,” he says.
The National Labor College is the only accredited college in the world
exclusively dedicated to educating union members, leaders, activists and staff.
Originally founded by the AFL-CIO in 1969 as the George Meany Center for Labor
Studies, it became the NLC in 1997, offering upper level degree completion
programs for union members seeking to finish their college education.
The IAFF awards scholarship funds annually to IAFF members to attend the
National Labor College. For more information, contact the National Labor
